ROMETTA
Located
in the Messina province at an altitude of some 560m, Rometta totals
nearly 5,500 inhabitants. It lies in a strategic position between
Messina and its district.
It
is endowed with both cultural and naturalistic sites. A Byzantine
church with a Greek-cross plan, dedicated to the SS. Saviour, dating
from between the 7th and 10th century, is its most attractive religious
building.
The
Chiesa Madre dedicated to the Madonna of the Assumption is also
worth-mentioning. The façade is graced with late-Renaissance
doorways and a niche containing a statue of the Virgin. Fine works
of art adorn the interior, such as a 1500’s holy water font
and a panel representing the Virgin and Child with St. Peter and
St. Paul.
Some
minor churches are worth a mention such as the Chiesa della Madonna
della Scala and the Chiesa dei Cappuccini, housed within the convent
of the same name, containing a panel depicting the Transfiguration.
